Quality Standards and Contract Farming in Cardamom Cultivation

The world of spice export is competitive and quality-driven. For a spice as prized as cardamom, especially the variety grown in Kerala, adhering to global quality standards is not just necessary—it’s essential. At Cherriepick, we follow a meticulously curated quality protocol that begins right at the farm level.

Our quality assurance starts with the soil. Farmers are trained to use only organic or low-residue fertilizers to ensure minimal chemical contamination. Water management, disease control, and harvesting techniques are strictly monitored. Cardamom is handpicked only when the pods reach optimal maturity, ensuring peak flavor and aroma.

Once harvested, the pods undergo a natural drying process, either in sunlight or through controlled drying chambers to maintain the green color and prevent mold. They are then sorted and graded based on size, color, and weight, before being sent for final packaging. Each batch undergoes quality testing for moisture content, oil percentage, and pesticide residue to meet export regulations.

Our success in maintaining top-tier standards is largely due to our contract farming model. Under this system, Cherriepick partners with a select group of farmers in Kerala. We provide them with high-quality planting material, technical guidance, and access to organic inputs. In return, we guarantee purchase of their produce at a fair and pre-agreed price.

This model creates a win-win situation. Farmers receive stable income and expert support, while we get consistent access to premium-quality cardamom. Our traceability system ensures complete transparency, from farm to export. Every batch of cardamom can be traced back to the exact farm it was grown on.

With increasing scrutiny on food safety and quality from global buyers, this integrated and transparent approach gives us a significant edge. Our cardamom is not just a spice; it’s a result of science, tradition, and partnership.
